The Chaski Challenge

Two weeks after the Treadmill 50k record the Madras Track & Field Team and YFC were awarded a Booster Club grant from Brooks Running. The grant included 12,400 worth of gear, and 2,000 cash. This grant came on top of the fundraising that was done at the event and it was awarded for two years. Mario’s was able to include the grant into his contract. Little did we know that the entire world would be entering the COVID Pandemic, which really changed the way the gear was distributed. But here is a video covering the joy the gear brought to these kids: Madras Track & Field Grant

Since all trail races were put on hold, suddenly chasing Treadmill World Records became popular. Mario got invited to be a part of a race between many elite athletes all over the country and since he had been training he said why not. Two of his friends and fellow elite athletes Max King, and Renee Metivier, also joined the field and the three of them setup the attempt down at Sea Level, and in a place with great air conditioning (Thank You Lane County YFC).

Mario, Max, and Renee knew they wanted to use this event to make a difference in their communities and with all camps being cancelled they decided to use the event as a fundraiser for a day camp this summer.

The goal of the camp is to build community between the diverse communities of Central Oregon. Here is more information on the Youth Running Camp:

In the end all three athletes ran better than expected. Mario broke the 100k Treadmill WR with a time of 6:39. Renee Broke both the Marathon and 50k Treadmill World Records with times of 2:42 & 3:11. And Max King broke the 50k Treadmill World Record with a time of 2:45 (only to get edged out by Tyler Andrews).

We believe this camp will provide an amazing experience and can’t wait to share that with everyone.
